the owner. After years of building and working on houses and outbuildings,
I am excited to have finally gone into business doing what I love to do.
Although I’ve been a schoolteacher for the past 6 years, I’ve been an after-
hours builder for longer than that. I started out designing and building
outbuildings for myself and working on houses for friends and family. From
there, my wife Natasha and I bought a small farmhouse in downstate
Michigan where we lived at the time. We thought it needed some work, but
what it really needed was to be torn down to the foundation and rebuilt from
scratch. This was my first real education in all aspects of residential
construction, since Natasha and I did our own work from the framing and
sheeting to the drywall, electrical, and plumbing.
Since then, I have designed and built numerous outbuildings for myself and
others and worked on home improvement projects, roofing, and siding in
order to learn more about the building trades. All in all, I have probably
spent several years as a builder and remodeler of homes, and designer
and builder of custom outbuildings. One thing I have learned is that it’s one
thing to build a house that will pass code, but it’s quite another thing to
design interior spaces that make people say, “Oh wow!” That’s what I’m
after in all my buildings. The real joy of building is in creating artistic and
aesthetic spaces that just “work.” A home can be more than just a box; it
can be a whole living environment that is warm, inviting, and vibrant. That
is what I want to do for each of my customers. Though your home,

When I’m not busy building, I enjoy a lot of other activities. My wife and I
operate a small organic produce business in the summer months. Our farm
is called Dancing Crane Farm. We grow all types of vegetables in our one-
acre market garden and sell them to our subscription members and others
each Wednesday at our farm. In the winter, I train and race Alaskan sled
dogs. I also participate in road bike and mountain bike races in the summer
and fall. These activities keep me healthy and active, and I really think that
it makes a difference in my mindset and the work that I do.
